MOUSE Corps is an advanced program for amazing high school MOUSE Squad students looking to combine their tech-skills with big ideas that transform the world around them.

The goal of the MOUSE Corps is to build upon MOUSE Squad skills through two program focuses (click each for more details):

Both program options help MOUSE Corps students gain experience by applying their talents to the world around them.

How MOUSE Corps Works:

  • First, fill out this application [scroll down].
  • If you are accepted, you, your MOUSE Squad coordinator and a parent/guardian will sign the MOUSE Corps Pledge.
  • You and your fellow MOUSE Corps team members will attend weekly Tuesday meetings after-school at 4pm to work together on your Legacy Project to design & build technology innovations and, in Pathways, to prepare for hands-on work experience in professional settings.
  • All MOUSE Corps Candidates are eligible to apply for seasonal activities like Spring shadowships, Summer Internships and MOUSE Corps Team Retreats, when available.

The Legacy Project & Pathways

mcorps_legacy_sm.png The Legacy Project: Starting in November with the IDEO Design & Prototype workshops, the Legacy Project is your chance to create your own new technology that works to address a social need. You will work in small groups to research, prototype and implement your idea by working 1-on-1 with a Technology Mentor in the field of your choice. Students last year learned how to make an Android App-Game & how to power mobile devices using solar panels attached to your clothing with a robotics expert. Learn more here.

mcorps_pathways_sm.pngPathways (Shadowships and Internships): Pathways students gain professional experience by participating in professionalism workshops and activities, 10 hours of after-school Job Shadowships in the Spring, full-time paid Summer Internships with major corporations, technology start-ups & non-profit organizations including Citi, New York City Council, the NYC Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications, TekServe, TIME Inc., Hackasaurus by Mozilla, individual tech mentors and many others. Participation in Pathways is merit-based and is not guaranteed. Students must be active participants in the Legacy Project and attend every workshop which includes submitting materials such as a resume and blogging on mousesquad.org (all covered in the workshops). My Values

Each MOUSE Corps Candidate pledges to uphold a series of core values.

As a MOUSE Corps Candidate, you commit to:

  • Community: using skills, creativity, and knowledge to create a positive impact locally and globally
  • Growth: aspiring to constantly evolve and improve personally, professionally, and ideologically
  • Team: growing ideas and actions collaboratively
  • Leadership: contributing to the activities of MOUSE Corps, the community, and your greater professional environment in positive, productive, and meaningful ways

My Start-Up

If you were going to pick an issue in your local/global community and create a start-up organization to address this issue, what would it look like?

Your start-up can be anything from a local lemonade stand, to a large software corporation, from a global non-profit to small business. Be Creative!

Time Commitment

MOUSE Corps meets every Tuesday throughout the school year.

To participate in MOUSE Corps, you must be available to attend after-school workshops starting at 4:00pm in Manhattan. Legacy & Pathways workshops are almost always on Tuesdays, with occasional Saturdays or Thursdays (no more than a couple times a year).

NOTE: All meetings are required. You will not be allowed to return if you miss more than 3 workshops with out contacting us in advance with a reasonable excuse.

Shadowships

All MOUSE Corps students are eligible to apply for a Pathways Shadowship after attending all Pathways workshops and participating in the Legacy Project. You are not required to participate in Pathways, and participation is based on an interview/application process.

Each Shadowship opportunity will have a different schedule. Typical Shadowships meet Monday - Friday starting at 4pm for 1-2 weeks after school.

Please let us know if you have any commitments after-school that will make it hard for you to attend meetings on time.
